Dua Lipa has initiated legal proceedings against Samsung, seeking $15 million in damages over the alleged unauthorised use of her likeness in a worldwide promotional campaign for its television sets. The British pop star contends that the electronics conglomerate employed a photograph of her, captured backstage at the Austin City Limits Festival in 2024, across marketing materials and TV packaging without securing her consent or offering compensation.
Details of the Allegations
According to the lawsuit, Samsung commenced utilising the image at the beginning of 2025 and exhibited a 'dismissive and callous' attitude when Lipa's representatives requested the cessation of its use. The legal filing asserts that Samsung profited from the apparent implication that Lipa endorsed their products, citing comments from fans indicating that some consumers purchased televisions because they believed she supported the brand.
Legal Claims and Demands
The legal action accuses Samsung of multiple violations, including copyright infringement, violation of the right of publicity, and false endorsement. Lipa's team is seeking at least $15 million in damages, in addition to the profits that Samsung allegedly garnered from the unauthorised use of her image. The case underscores ongoing tensions between celebrities and corporations over the commercial exploitation of personal likenesses without proper authorisation.
