Nigel Farage is facing a parliamentary investigation for failing to declare a £5 million gift from Thailand-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harbourne. Property records indicate the Reform UK leader completed the purchase of a £1.4 million house in cash in May 2024, shortly after receiving the undeclared donation.
Farage's Defence
Mr Farage asserts the £5 million gift was intended for his personal security and that the property purchase process commenced prior to him receiving the funds. He maintains that there was no deliberate attempt to conceal the donation.
Labour's Accusations
Labour has accused Mr Farage of attempting to “cover up” the controversial donation, citing a potential conflict of interest given his stance on crypto transactions. Green Party MP Sian Berry also called for scrutiny, stating that the focus should be on the £5 million donation.
Potential Consequences
Should he be found in serious breach of parliamentary rules, Mr Farage could face suspension from the Commons. This might trigger a recall petition for his Clacton seat, potentially leading to a by-election.
The investigation underscores ongoing concerns about transparency and foreign donations in UK politics.
