Five Italian divers lost their lives during an underwater cave expedition in the Maldives on Thursday, in what authorities describe as one of the country's most serious diving accidents. The group was exploring caves at depths of 50 to 60 metres in the Vaavu Atoll, a region notorious for strong currents and intricate underwater tunnel systems.
Rescue Efforts and Victims
A distress alert was raised when the divers failed to resurface. Rescue teams launched a search and later recovered one body, while the remaining four are believed to be trapped inside the same cave system. The victims have been identified as Monica Montefalcone, Giorgia Sommacal, Muriel Oddenino, Federico Gualtieri and Gianluca Benedetti.
Investigation and Challenges
Maldivian authorities are investigating the incident, with rough weather hampering recovery operations. The accident has sent shockwaves through the diving community and is considered a tragic milestone in the country's diving history.
