Fugees Rapper Pras Begins 14-Year Prison Sentence Over Illegal Campaign Funding
Fugees Rapper Pras Starts 14-Year Prison Term

Grammy-winning rapper Prakazrel 'Pras' Michel, a founding member of the Fugees, has surrendered to federal authorities to begin serving a 14-year prison sentence. The conviction stems from his role in illegally routing millions of dollars in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obama's 2012 reelection campaign.

Details of the Sentence

Michel reported to a low-security correctional facility in Arizona on Thursday, according to a spokesperson. Federal records now list him as an inmate at the institution. 'Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice. Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence,' said Erica Dumas, Michel's spokesperson. She added that his legal team continues to contest the charges. 'This chapter is difficult, but it is not his final one,' Dumas remarked.

The Conviction and Charges

Michel, 53, was found guilty in 2023 on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. He was sentenced late last year. Prosecutors alleged that he obtained over $120 million from Malaysian billionaire Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, and directed a portion of those funds through straw donors to support Obama's campaign. Additionally, Michel attempted to halt a U.S. Justice Department investigation into Low, tampered with two witnesses, and committed perjury during his trial, prosecutors said. Low has consistently maintained his innocence.
