Jordanian suspect arrested for stealing Depp's card

A Jordanian fraud suspect has been arrested after he allegedly stole Johnny Depp's bank card and spent over £500,000 on various items. The 62-year-old actor, best known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, was reportedly unaware of the significant sums being drained from his account for more than two years. The fraudulent activity only came to light when his bank flagged the transactions as suspicious.

Investigation and Arrest

Investigators traced the online transactions to a high-profile American bank client, leading to the arrest of the suspect, a 27-year-old man, who was renting a flat in Budapest, Hungary, on May 6. Authorities allege that the suspect used the stolen credit card details for online purchases and accommodation bookings. Investigators are currently examining 308 separate transactions totalling more than £536,534 (€619,508).

Dramatic video footage shows police officers detaining the man and escorting him away in handcuffs. The case began earlier this year when an American financial institution contacted the Hungarian branch of the FBI after discovering illegal withdrawals from an account belonging to one of their clients. Detectives later identified the client as Johnny Depp, who had allegedly failed to notice the missing funds despite hundreds of transactions being carried out between January 2024 and December 2025.

How the Fraud Was Traced

Police traced the fraudulent activity through IP addresses, email accounts, and a Hungarian phone number allegedly connected to bookings made using the stolen card data. During a raid on the suspect's flat, officers seized electronic devices believed to have been used in the alleged fraud scheme. Additionally, substances suspected to be narcotics were discovered inside the property, leading to an extra investigation for suspected drug possession.

The suspect denies the accusations, although a court has ordered his pre-trial detention. Police are still trying to determine how Depp's American Express credit card details were obtained. They have not ruled out data theft, a leak, or a previous online transaction as possible sources.

Depp's Connection to Budapest

Johnny Depp has spent time in Budapest in recent years while filming productions, including the film Modi. The actor was previously seen filming scenes near Buda Castle, the Hungarian State Opera House, and other well-known locations across the city.

Hungarian police have stated that the investigation into the alleged fraud is ongoing, and further arrests have not been ruled out.
