Kansas Teacher Grabs Students at Graduation, Sparking Controversy
Kansas Teacher Grabs Students at Graduation

A high school graduation in Kansas descended into chaos after a teacher physically grappled with celebrating students, forcing them into awkward handshakes on stage. The incident occurred at Wichita High School East on May 20, as students crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.

Confrontation Captured on Video

Video footage shared by stunned audience members shows an unnamed school administrator aggressively grabbing students Key Henderson and Serena Gomez. The official first confronted Henderson after he appeared to deliberately walk past him, refusing to let him go until he shook his hand and accepted a piece of paper.

Approximately 20 minutes later, the staff member grabbed Gomez as she began to rejoice on stage. He seized her raised hands, gripped her wrist, and forced her into a handshake before handing her a card as she walked away.

Student and Family Reactions

Gomez told local outlet KAKE that the administrator's combativeness ruined her moment and was unnecessary. Her aunt, Sabrina Duran, shared the video on social media with a caption that included strong language directed at the teacher.

The footage divided opinions online. Some accused the teacher of being overly aggressive, while others maintained he was simply trying to ensure each student received a handshake and a card in an orderly manner.

School District Response

In a statement to KAKE, Wichita Public Schools defended the administrator, stating that students' on-stage celebrations violated graduation policies. 'There are clear expectations shared with students before the graduation ceremony in order to get all 500 students across the stage in a timely manner so everyone can have their moment to celebrate,' the statement read.

The Daily Mail has contacted the school district for further comment.

Additional Graduation Incidents

The controversy at Wichita High School East followed other disruptions at district graduations. At South High School's graduation on May 21, around ten students and teenagers engaged in fights on the Wichita State University campus. The school district stated the altercation occurred after most attendees had left Koch Arena.

Wichita State University released a statement saying officers responded to a physical altercation outside the arena and intervened to restore order. The incident was brief, with no arrests or injuries reported.

Weeks earlier, a fight broke out at Chester Lewis Learning Academy's commencement ceremony within the same district. Terrii Moses, Director of Safety and Environmental Services for Wichita Public Schools, commented on the challenges of managing large gatherings: 'Anytime you have a large number of people that get together, you have the opportunity for people who don't get along.'

Moses added that indoor events are easier to manage, but releasing everyone simultaneously increases the chance of interactions between individuals. He stated, 'We've staffed all of our graduations, we believe appropriately. We always debrief and work with our partners to determine better ways that we can provide security.'
