Coronation Street legend Ken Barlow found himself at the centre of a violent confrontation on Wednesday night's episode, as his son Daniel Osbourne lashed out and accidentally struck him. The incident occurred during a tense family gathering at the Barlow household, where Daniel's erratic behaviour had reached a breaking point.
Daniel's Spiral Continues
Daniel, played by Rob Mallard, has been struggling to cope after discovering that his ex-girlfriend Megan had an illicit relationship with a student. In recent weeks, he has turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism, while Jodie Ramsey began spreading hate about him anonymously online through an account called Truthteller. When Daniel realised Jodie was behind the account, he hit the bottle again and passed out, leaving his young son Bertie unsupervised. Bertie accidentally started a small fire while using the microwave, prompting him to flee to Ken's house. Daniel's uncle Adam later went to the flat to sort things out.
The Attack
In Wednesday's episode, Daniel was awoken by a phone call from the school asking about Bertie's whereabouts. Panicked, he searched the streets until his sister Tracy Barlow found him and took him back to the Barlow home, where Bertie was safe. However, a vicious row erupted as the family confronted Daniel about his dangerous behaviour, especially concerning Bertie's safety. Adam brought up the memory of Bertie's late mother Sinead, who died of cervical cancer in 2019, saying: "When Sinead died, what did you tell Bertie? You told him she fell asleep and she never woke up. Well, guess what? What happened last night, huh? You fell asleep, and he couldn't wake you up." Enraged, Daniel raised his fist to punch Adam but accidentally struck Ken, who was standing behind him, knocking him onto the sofa.
Ken's Ultimatum
As a shocked Daniel tried to process what had happened, Ken told him: "I'd like you to leave now. But... Just go... and grow up. Think you'll be able to manage that? Because whatever you're doing isn't working, and I refuse to be caught in the crossfire." Daniel attempted to reason with his father, but Ken insisted he leave. When Daniel protested that he needed to take Bertie with him, Ken refused, sending him home alone.
Actor's Insight
Rob Mallard, who has played Daniel for nearly a decade, spoke about the intense scenes: "It's like everything is spiralling. They all call him out. They corner him in the Barlows and I think he just feels trapped, he goes to lash out at Adam and he catches Ken. It's always Ken that he seems to hurt." He added: "It's like he's betrayed the only woman that was loyal to him, because he promised Sinead that he would put himself second and Bertie first always. And yet he's allowed recent events to push Bertie to second, third, fourth place in his mind. So basically the only woman that didn't betray him, he feels like he's let her down now posthumously." Mallard described the incident as a wake-up call for Daniel, who fears losing custody of Bertie. He suggested the character could spiral further, possibly even losing temporary custody to teach him a lesson.
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX.
