Ex-Man Utd star Kuszczak felt like a 'slave' after blocked transfer
Kuszczak felt like a 'slave' at Man Utd after transfer block

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak has opened up about his frustration at being blocked from leaving the club, comparing his situation to that of a 'slave'. The Polish shot-stopper, who won numerous trophies during his six-year spell at Old Trafford, now holds two season tickets and regularly attends matches, often engaging in banter with away fans.

Kuszczak's Trophy-Laden Career at United

Kuszczak joined Manchester United from West Bromwich Albion in 2007, initially as an understudy to Edwin van der Sar. During his time at the club, he secured three Premier League titles, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. Despite this success, he made only 61 appearances for the Red Devils, a figure surpassed by his 89 outings for Brighton & Hove Albion after leaving in 2012.

Frustration Over Blocked Transfer

In November 2011, Kuszczak publicly expressed his anger after United blocked a potential loan move to Leeds United. At the time, he was the fourth-choice goalkeeper behind David de Gea, Anders Lindegaard, and Ben Amos, and had not featured in any first-team matches that season. He told the press: 'I asked Sir Alex Ferguson to let me leave before the January transfer window. I want to get back into the national team for Euro 2012, but it seems he doesn't care. The club blocked a two-month loan to Leeds. It was a glimmer of hope for me.'

Kuszczak added: 'Do they do it maliciously? I'm sad they behave like that. I've become a slave to Manchester. I'm frustrated but I don't want to slander or criticise Ferguson. It's not my style. I have respect for him because, for me, he's a great manager but I hope he will let me go in January.'

Resolution and Life After Football

United declined to comment at the time, but Kuszczak's grievances were eventually addressed. He joined Watford on loan in February 2012 before signing permanently for Brighton at the end of the season. After retiring in 2019, he returned to Poland to establish a construction business and work as a goalkeeping coach. However, he now resides in Manchester and loves attending Old Trafford as a fan.

Enjoying Retirement as a Fan

Kuszczak said: 'I've got two season tickets and I love sitting with the fans. I'm just in normal seats, not far from the away fans and I can go and shout the team on. I love it, it's great. Sometimes, my old friends like Wes Brown say come and sit with us but I'm like 'no, I want to be in my seat with the fans!' I'm screaming from a different angle now, I used to scream from the goal, now I scream from the stands!'

He added: 'I'm enjoying my retirement. I prepared for this moment, I always have things to do. I'm in the property industry of building houses and flats, as well as football that's always been my passion. I did some of my coaching badges and I also went to university and finished a degree in journalism, believe it or not, but, at the moment, I'm focused on my company and developing houses and flats in Poland, so I travel a lot.'

Upcoming Clash at Amex Stadium

On Sunday, Kuszczak's two former clubs, Manchester United and Brighton, face off at the Amex Stadium on the final day of the 2025/26 Premier League season. The match promises to be an emotional occasion for the retired goalkeeper, who still holds both clubs dear.
