Labour MP's Former Aide Pleads Guilty to Possessing Indecent Child Images

Conor McGrath, a 29-year-old former aide to Labour MP Kevin Bonavia, has admitted to possessing more than 500 indecent images of children. McGrath, who also served as a borough councillor in Stevenage between 2023 and 2025, entered his guilty plea at Stevenage Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Details of the Charges and Court Proceedings

The charges against McGrath include three counts of making indecent images of children. Specifically, the prosecution detailed that he made 77 category A images, 109 category B images, and 329 category C images and videos between June 2024 and March 2025. During the court hearing, McGrath confirmed his personal details and pleaded guilty while wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and red tie in the dock, visibly wiping his brow as he entered his pleas.

District Judge Alan Thorn ruled that the severity of the matters fell outside the sentencing powers of the magistrates' court, leading to the case being referred to Crown court for sentencing. McGrath was granted bail with strict conditions, including residing at his home address in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, and refraining from any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 18.

Investigation and Police Actions

The court heard that police initially arrested McGrath at his home on 25 March 2024 on an unrelated matter, seizing several electronic devices such as his iPhone and iPad. Prosecutor Menekse Sahan stated that McGrath failed to provide his pins and passwords when requested initially. While released under investigation, Hertfordshire Police received a referral from the Metropolitan Police regarding a report that McGrath had made a reference to a colleague about the potential discovery of indecent images on his devices.

This led to a second seizure of his electronics, where police uncovered the indecent images. It is understood that MP Kevin Bonavia took immediate action to inform the police as soon as he became aware of the allegations against McGrath, and the two have had no contact since the incident came to light.

Mitigation and Upcoming Sentencing

In court, Angela Horne, representing McGrath, presented mitigation arguments, highlighting that the defendant has suffered trauma from his childhood, resulting in fragile mental health. She noted that the charges and legal proceedings have significantly altered his life. A pre-sentence report has been ordered, and McGrath is scheduled to be sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on 17 April.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about child protection and the legal consequences for possession of indecent materials, particularly involving individuals in public or political roles. The community and authorities await the final sentencing outcome as the judicial process continues.
