Suspended Labour MP Accepted Donation from Husband's Firm Before Spy Arrest

Joani Reid, the Labour MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven who is currently suspended from the party, received a £2,400 donation from her husband's firm just three weeks before he was arrested on suspicion of spying for China. The donation was registered in her latest interests declaration, raising questions about financial links amid a national security investigation.

Details of the Donation and Arrest

According to her register of interests, Ms Reid accepted the gift from Earthcott Ltd on 12 February. The entry described it as 'media training' valued at £2,400. Her husband, David Taylor, is the sole director of Earthcott Ltd, a PR, communications, and consultancy business, and owns 75 per cent or more of its shares.

On 4 March, Taylor was among three men arrested by counter-terrorism officers at addresses in London and Wales. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrests were on suspicion of spying for China, with all three released on bail until May. Taylor, 39, was listed as a 'lobbyist' in Ms Reid's registered interests.

Reid's Response and Suspension

Following her husband's arrest, Ms Reid stated she had 'never seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any law' and emphasised she was 'not part of my husband's business activities'. She also declared she was 'voluntarily suspending myself' from the Labour whip and would not sit as a Labour MP until internal investigations conclude.

In a recent statement, Ms Reid described last week as 'the worst of my life', adding: 'The shock of recent days has been difficult for me and my family. I want to reiterate something very important: I am not under investigation by the police and no accusations have been against me. I have done nothing wrong. I love my country.'

Previous Financial Links and Party Investigations

This is not the first financial connection between Ms Reid and her husband's businesses. It has previously been reported that her consultancy firm, Reid Strategy Ltd, received more than £23,000 in interest-free loans from two of Taylor's companies. These revelations add to the scrutiny surrounding the couple's financial dealings.

Ms Reid has been suspended from the Labour Party while an internal probe takes place. Taylor has also been suspended from the party pending an investigation. A Labour Party spokesperson said: 'Joani Reid has agreed to fully co-operate with the Labour Party's investigation into these matters.'

Reid's Statements on China

In an effort to distance herself from the allegations, Ms Reid made a series of statements about her lack of involvement with China. She said: 'I have never been to China. I have never spoken on China or China-related matters in the Commons. I have never asked a question on China-related matters.'

She further asserted: 'As far as I am aware I have never met any Chinese businesses whilst I have been an MP, any Chinese diplomats or government employees, nor raised any concern with ministers or anyone else on behalf of, even coincidentally, Chinese interests. I am a social democrat who believes in freedom of expression, free trade unions and free elections. I am not any sort of admirer or apologist for the Chinese Communist party's dictatorship.'

The timing of the donation, registered within the 28-day deadline for accepting gifts, and its proximity to the arrest have intensified the political and security implications of this case, with ongoing investigations by both police and the Labour Party.
