Off Campus Star Won't Return for Season 2

The hit Prime Video series Off Campus will look markedly different when it returns for its second season, as one of its main stars will not be reprising his role. Josh Heuston, who portrayed musician Justin Kohl, has confirmed he will not appear in the upcoming installment, though showrunner Louisa Levy has left the door open for a potential comeback in future seasons.

Heuston's Departure Confirmed

Heuston, an Australian actor, addressed speculation about his character's future in a recent interview with Variety. When asked if fans can expect his return, he stated, “At this stage, no.” He added, “We’ll see. Everything from scheduling to storylines to books… there’s a lot of stories to show in this particular series.” He emphasised the show's commitment to staying faithful to Elle Kennedy's book series, noting, “You’ve got to stay true to Elle Kennedy’s books and let that rock.”

Showrunner Louisa Levy had previously revealed to TV Guide that Heuston's character would not be part of season two. “Not next season,” she said. “But I love Josh and I would not write him off if I can find a way to bring Justin back at some point.” Levy expressed interest in exploring more plotlines from the books, particularly involving the character Stella, who is Justin's love interest in the novels. “We never got a chance to meet Stella, who is the person he ends up with in the book. So maybe we'll find a way to fold him into a future season. We don't have him [available] next season, but never say never,” she explained.

Season Two Focus

The first season of Off Campus revolved around a love triangle between Hannah Wells (Ella Bright), Justin Kohl (Josh Heuston), and Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli). However, season two is expected to shift focus to a different romance. The final episodes of season one set up characters Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla) and Dean Di Laurentis (Stephen Kalyn) as the next central couple, adapting elements from the third novel in the series rather than the second.

Levy explained her decision to alter the source material to TV Guide: “Happily ever afters are wonderful and so important for this genre of novel, but they're not that helpful for television because we have to keep telling stories. So part of that was my attempt to give [viewers] the Hannah and Garrett happily ever after that I wanted, that I know fans will want, but still leaving something hanging and some question going into Season 2 of, ‘How is this going to be resolved, and how is this going to drive story forward?’” She concluded, “I want people to tune in Season 2 and watch what we have in store.”

Production Details

Amazon renewed Off Campus before the first season even premiered. Filming for the new episodes is scheduled to begin in Canada in June, with a release expected in 2027.
