One Show Viewers Baffled as Vernon Kay and Alex Jones Ignore Strictly News
One Show Fans Baffled as Vernon and Alex Skip Strictly News

Viewers of The One Show were left puzzled on Tuesday evening as presenters Vernon Kay and Alex Jones made no mention of the major Strictly Come Dancing hosting announcement, despite the show's close ties to the BBC dance competition.

New Strictly Hosts Revealed

Earlier on Tuesday, 19 May, the BBC confirmed that Emma Willis, comedian Josh Widdicombe, and professional dancer Johannes Radebe would take over as hosts of Strictly Come Dancing this autumn. This marks a new era for the beloved programme following the departure of long-time presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman last year. Tess, 57, had been at the helm since the show's inception in 2004, while Claudia, 54, joined as co-host in 2014.

Vernon Kay's Personal Connection

The omission was particularly notable given Vernon Kay's personal history with Strictly. Kay, 52, has been married to Tess Daly since 2003, though earlier this month the couple announced their separation after 23 years of marriage. Despite the split, they have remained on good terms, even pictured together recently. Fans expected the show to address the news, especially as both programmes air on BBC One.

Viewer Reactions

Social media users quickly expressed their surprise. One person wrote on X: "Any comment from Vernon on #Strictly and its new presenters? Just asking.. #theoneshow." Another questioned: "I thought #theoneshow would mention #Strictly but with Vernon Kay presenting, perhaps it would be awkward?" A third added: "I wonder if Emma, Josh, and Johannes will be on #TheOneShow tonight talking about their new roles as #Strictly hosts?"

An Exciting Announcement Instead

Although the Strictly news was overlooked, Kay and Jones did make a significant announcement of their own. At the end of the episode, Kay revealed: "Now, before we go, there's just time to say how excited everyone here at The One Show is on our 20th anniversary year. We've all been nominated, long-listed, for a National Television Award in the Factual Entertainment category. Alex, Roman [Kemp], and myself have also been put on the long list for the Presenter category." Jones quipped: "It's quite a long list, but you know..." to which Kay joked: "Everyone's on there, let's be honest. Just give it to Ant and Dec now!"

The One Show continues on weeknights at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
