A paedophile from Ashington, Northumberland, who faked a severe disability to evade justice has been exposed by CCTV footage. John Siddell, 41, pretended to be a non-verbal wheelchair user unable to hold up his own head during court-ordered appointments, but Leicestershire Police captured him walking, talking, and socialising on camera.
Deception Unravelled
Siddell's elaborate ruse involved claiming he suffered from a debilitating condition that left him immobile and unable to communicate. However, investigators grew suspicious and installed covert surveillance, which showed him moving freely and engaging in conversations. The footage contradicted his claims, leading to his arrest.
Brother's Complicity
His brother, James Siddell, 44, assisted the deception by lying to police about John's health conditions. Both were convicted of perverting the course of justice. John Siddell received a total sentence of 15 years, including 11 years and 10 months for 15 child sex offences. James Siddell was sentenced to 2 years and 9 months.
The case highlights the lengths offenders may go to avoid accountability, but also the effectiveness of surveillance in uncovering the truth. Leicestershire Police praised the investigative work that led to the convictions, emphasising that such crimes will not go unpunished.
