Police officers were injured during “serious disorder” in Glasgow’s Trongate area after Celtic’s Scottish Premiership title win. Around 3,000 fans gathered to celebrate the 3-1 victory over Hearts, with some climbing traffic lights and other structures.
Police in riot gear moved in to clear the streets after bottles and other missiles were thrown at officers. Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland said officers faced “significant levels of hostility” and that being assaulted “is not part of the job”. A number of arrests were made.
Hearts players had to be escorted off the pitch at Parkhead after a pitch invasion. The club condemned the “shameful” scenes, reporting “serious physical and verbal abuse” towards their players and staff. Police Scotland are investigating whether any players were assaulted.
Police Scotland accused Celtic of failing to put plans in place for official celebrations, leading to rest days being cancelled. However, Glasgow City Council disputed this. Celtic had urged fans to avoid gathering in the city centre, but the force said urgent discussions are needed to prevent a repeat.
