Police Probe Andrew Over Alleged Inappropriate Behaviour at Royal Ascot in 2002
Police Probe Andrew Over Royal Ascot Incident

Police investigating Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor are reportedly examining an allegation that he behaved inappropriately towards a woman at Royal Ascot in 2002, according to The Sunday Times. The incident is said to have occurred at the prestigious racing event in Berkshire, a key fixture in the royal family's summer calendar. Queen Elizabeth II was also present at the 2002 event, which marked her Golden Jubilee.

Investigation Details

The Sunday Times reported that it remains unclear whether the claim was reported to officers at the time or more recently. A Thames Valley Police (TVP) spokesperson stated: "We cannot go into specifics of the investigation, but we are following all reasonable lines of inquiry." The force, which covers Windsor and Ascot, is continuing its investigation into the former duke. On Friday, it was confirmed that officers will consider allegations of sexual misconduct as part of their inquiry into potential misconduct in public office.

Broader Inquiry

Detectives at TVP are understood to be concerned that the public believes they are only focused on accusations that Andrew shared information while serving as a trade envoy. However, the legal terms of the offence under investigation are much broader. Andrew served as the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment from 2001 to 2011, stepping down amid controversy over his friendship with convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding his links to Epstein.

The major investigation is expected to be lengthy and will face obstacles, including proving whether Andrew held a public office at the time of the allegations—a matter that is not clearly legally defined. If this is found not to be the case, the force would continue investigating any evidence of other separate offences.

Legal Proceedings

Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office on February 19 and interviewed under caution before being released under investigation. Searches were also conducted at his former homes in Windsor and Norfolk. Detectives are working through evidence recovered during the operation. They have made a formal request to the United States Department of Justice for the original versions of the Epstein files but have not yet received any information.
