Simeone's 'Atrocious' Behaviour Blamed for Arsenal Penalty Controversy
Simeone's 'Atrocious' Behaviour Blamed for Arsenal Penalty

Diego Simeone has faced widespread criticism for his touchline behaviour during the VAR check that denied Arsenal a crucial penalty in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg at the Emirates Stadium.

VAR Controversy Overshadows Draw

Arsenal were left furious after referee Danny Makkelie overturned his initial penalty decision following a lengthy VAR review. David Hancko, who had already conceded a first-half penalty, was initially adjudged to have fouled Eberechi Eze. However, after consulting the pitchside monitor and reviewing 13 replays, Makkelie concluded there was no contact, reversing his call. This decision proved pivotal, as the Premier League leaders had to settle for a draw.

The controversy was compounded by a previous VAR intervention that saw Ben White penalised for handball, allowing Julian Alvarez to equalise from the spot. Arsenal had taken an early lead through Viktor Gyokeres' penalty after Hancko's clumsy challenge.

Pundits Condemn Simeone's Antics

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard highlighted Simeone's behaviour, stating: "Simeone is crazy, slapping his players on the back of the head. He played a big part. From a coaching point of view, his behaviour there, he was in the referee's eyesight coming over."

Martin Keown, the former Arsenal defender, argued that VAR had overstepped its role: "I simply don't think it was clear and obvious. The referee should be able to referee the game. VAR has got too involved. Simeone's actions at the sidelines, the drama he creates, the referee buckled under pressure."

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher noted: "I just wish we could have got a wider shot of Simeone's antics while he was looking at the screen. He was literally five yards behind the screen, bellowing at the ref, waving at the ref. If there was ever a time to get a yellow card for trying to influence a referee, it was then."

The most scathing assessment came from Steve McManaman, who said: "I absolutely hate VAR. The behaviour of Diego Simeone and his assistants when the referee was trying to come over to look at the monitor was atrocious. The constant haranguing of the fourth official, once he gives it and it's contact, it's not a clear and obvious error. You shouldn't go back and ref it again."

Match Analysis

Arsenal started strongly and took the lead when Gyokeres converted a penalty after Hancko's foul. Atletico Madrid grew into the game and equalised through Alvarez's spot-kick after White's handball. The second half saw Atletico seize control, but Arsenal thought they had regained the lead when Eze went down under Hancko's challenge. However, VAR intervened, and the decision was overturned, much to Arsenal's dismay.

Former Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez was handed the opportunity to level matters just before the hour mark. White was penalised for the ball striking his left hand as he turned his back to block a well-worked free-kick from Simeone's side. Alvarez dispatched the penalty with authority, driving it into the top left corner as Raya stood helpless.

The result leaves the tie perfectly poised ahead of next week's second leg at the Emirates. Arsenal will be hoping to overcome the disappointment and secure a place in the final.
