Sovereign Citizen Arrested After Ramming Ute into NSW Police Station
Sovereign Citizen Rams Ute into NSW Police Station

A suspected sovereign citizen has been taken into custody following an incident in which he allegedly drove a utility vehicle at police officers before crashing into a police station in regional New South Wales.

Incident Disrupts Retirement Celebration

The event unfolded on Friday afternoon as officers were preparing to honour Detective Senior Constable Scott Whale, who was retiring after 40 years of service. A planned march for the retiring detective was abruptly interrupted when a man reportedly drove a Toyota Land Cruiser towards patrolling officers and then smashed into the front of Mudgee police station at approximately 1:30 PM.

As soon as the vehicle came to a halt, police swiftly arrested the 67-year-old driver at the station. Investigations are ongoing.

Witness Accounts

Witness Kirtis Goldsmith described the scene to Nine News, stating: "[The ute] smashed the whole front wall of the police station, cops came running out everywhere, pulling up everywhere."

Another witness, Michael, who was inside the police station when the collision occurred, recounted his experience: "One of the constables grabbed the spikes as I came through the building. I was sitting on the chairs. I was lucky I was sitting there, I only got a bit of a scratch. I got it all checked out, I was all clear."

Targeted Attack Alleged

The driver was known to police, and authorities will allege that he specifically targeted Detective Senior Constable Whale's retirement march. Detective Senior Constable Whale had been based in Mudgee for the past three years, working with the rural crime prevention team.

According to Nine News, police will claim that the man had prior dealings with the detective and that his behaviour during this incident was consistent with that of a sovereign citizen—an individual who believes they are not subject to government laws.

No Injuries Reported

A NSW Police spokesman confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident. "Contingencies are being put in place to meet the needs of the local community and Mudgee Police Station remains contactable," the spokesman said. "The driver allegedly drove at a police officer before crashing into the front of a police station."

Police are continuing their inquiries, and the community has been assured that alternative arrangements are in place for police services.
