Tuchel Surprised by Maguire Family Outburst Over Squad

Thomas Tuchel has admitted he was 'surprised' by the public outbursts from Harry Maguire and his family following the defender's omission from the England World Cup squad. The manager also revealed that he prioritised building an 'unselfish' team over simply selecting the 26 most talented players available.

High-Profile Omissions

Tuchel made a series of notable exclusions in a squad that was leaked on Thursday night and officially confirmed on Friday. Among those left at home were Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Lewis Hall, and Luke Shaw. These decisions have sparked anger among some England fans, with Maguire's family particularly vocal in their criticism.

Family Reactions

Maguire's mother stated she was 'absolutely disgusted' by the decision, while his wife Fern claimed the defender is 'up against a single opinion'. However, Tuchel remains firm in his approach, emphasising the importance of a cohesive group for the tournament in the United States.

Tuchel's Philosophy

Speaking on Friday, Tuchel explained his selection criteria: 'I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players.' He added, 'Teams win championships, it is as simple as that. What we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team.'

The manager stressed the need for 'committed' players with 'spirit' and 'unselfish' attitudes. Regarding Maguire's specific reaction, Tuchel said: 'I was a bit surprised, but I respect his personality a lot, I respect his quality a lot. He had a quality season. I can understand the disappointment. I can see the reason behind the disappointment.'

Private Conversation

Tuchel noted that he had a private conversation with Maguire, during which the defender had the chance to express his feelings. 'This is fair enough because I can see all the reasons why he could be in the squad. But the decision is that we stood firmly with our central defenders that carried us through September, October, November.' He added that some of those selected are part of a leadership group that set high standards, concluding: 'It was a decision for these 26 players, even if it feels as it's against these players.'
