California Sheriff Seizes Over 650,000 Ballots in Gubernatorial Election Investigation
In a dramatic escalation of tensions over election integrity, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican candidate for governor, has seized more than 650,000 ballots from the 2025 election. The move comes as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of unlawful ballot casting during the vote that passed Proposition 50, a redistricting measure. Bianco announced the seizure at a press conference in Washington DC on 15 May 2024, highlighting his push to physically count the ballots and compare them with recorded totals.
Investigation Targets Proposition 50 Vote Discrepancies
Sheriff Bianco claims his investigation focuses on discrepancies between machine counts and final tallies submitted to the state, which he says could indicate fraud in the passage of Proposition 50. This proposition redrew congressional districts in California, a move seen as a response to gerrymandering efforts in Republican-led states like Texas, aiming to favor Democrats. However, election officials and California Attorney General Rob Bonta have firmly dismissed these allegations, noting that the discrepancy in Riverside County is only 103 votes, according to the Riverside Record.
Bianco's team obtained the ballots after serving search warrants to the registrar of voters last month, and a Riverside superior court judge has appointed a special master to oversee the counting process. "This investigation is simple: physically count the ballots and compare that result with the total votes recorded," Bianco stated, emphasizing his commitment to election integrity.
State Officials Condemn Ballot Seizure as Unprecedented
Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, has criticized Bianco's actions as unprecedented and designed to sow distrust in elections. In statements reported by the Los Angeles Times, Bonta asserted, "There is no indication, anywhere in the United States, of widespread voter fraud. Counts, recounts, hand counts, audits, and court cases all support this." He has sent multiple letters to Bianco's office over the past two months, arguing that the sheriff's staff is not qualified to conduct a recount and labeling the ballot seizure as "unacceptable" and a "dangerous precedent."
The investigation was prompted by claims from the Riverside Election Integrity Team, a local group of residents, who contended that a discrepancy of 45,896 votes exists between the final vote count and handwritten records of hand-counted ballots. Despite this, state officials maintain that the election was conducted fairly and accurately.
Political Context and Gubernatorial Race Implications
Chad Bianco is one of the two most prominent Republicans in California's crowded gubernatorial primary, which includes more than half a dozen Democrats. California employs a top-two primary system, where all candidates appear on the same ballot regardless of party, and the two with the most votes advance to the November general election. Bianco's investigation into the 2025 election could influence his campaign, positioning him as a champion of election security amid ongoing national debates over voting rights.
Proposition 50 was decisively passed by California voters last year, championed by Governor Gavin Newsom in response to attempts by former President Donald Trump to gerrymander new conservative seats in red states. California Republicans, supported by the Trump administration, challenged the measure, but the US Supreme Court denied an emergency petition to halt the implementation of the new maps.
As the investigation unfolds, it highlights deep partisan divides over election integrity and redistricting in California, with potential ramifications for the upcoming gubernatorial race and broader political landscape.
