Green Party Leader Admits Not Voting in Local Elections

The leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski, has acknowledged that he did not participate in the recent local elections, walking back a previous assertion made by an aide that he had submitted a postal vote.

Initial Claims and Retraction

The party initially indicated that an aide had suggested Polanski cast a postal ballot for Green mayoral candidate Zoë Garbett in Hackney. However, the Green Party has since clarified that Polanski was “unable to vote” due to his relocation and heightened security concerns following antisemitic and homophobic abuse.

Security and Registration Issues

Polanski is currently in discussions with his local authority to register anonymously and with the Metropolitan Police to review his security arrangements. This admission follows recent reports that Polanski did not pay the correct council tax amount while residing on a houseboat, which the party characterized as an “unintentional mistake”.

In a statement, Polanski emphasized that the decision not to vote was not taken lightly, but was necessitated by personal safety considerations. He expressed regret over the confusion caused by the earlier misinformation.
