Aston Villa have secured their place in a first European final in 44 years after a commanding 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the all-English Europa League semi-final second leg, advancing 4-1 on aggregate.
Emery's Masterclass Continues
Manager Unai Emery stands just one win away from clinching a fifth Europa League title, a competition in which he has built a formidable reputation. Only Bundesliga side Freiburg now stand between Villa and their first major trophy in three decades.
The Villans entered the match trailing 1-0 from the first leg after Chris Wood's penalty, but Emery's tactical acumen once again shone through in a European semi-final. His side turned the tie around emphatically, with goals from Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Buendia, and a quickfire double from John McGinn sealing a memorable night at Villa Park.
Royal Approval and Historic Night
Prince William, a devoted Villa fan, was seen celebrating passionately as his beloved club produced one of the most famous nights in its history. Emery has transformed Villa since taking over in November 2022, guiding them to the Europa Conference League semi-final two years ago and the Champions League quarter-final last season, while consistently challenging in the upper echelons of the Premier League.
This group now has the opportunity to crown their remarkable journey with silverware and etch their names into Villa folklore alongside the 1982 European Cup-winning side.
Forest's Hopes Dashed
Nottingham Forest, missing key midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, aimed to emulate their own European greats of the past but left Villa Park with regrets. Villa sacrificed their Premier League match against Tottenham on Sunday, fielding a much-changed side that suffered a poor defeat, to focus fully on the European task.
The Spaniard's demand for energy was met as Villa dominated from the outset, buoyed by a fervent atmosphere. An early scare came when James McAtee switched play to Omari Hutchinson, who cut inside and fired just wide, but from that point, Villa launched wave after wave of attacks.
First-Half Breakthrough
The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute as Villa levelled the tie on aggregate. Emiliano Buendia mesmerised the Forest defence, ghosting past Elliot Anderson and Jair Cunha before laying the ball on a plate for Watkins, who tapped in from three yards out, sparking jubilation in the Holte End.
Villa continued to dominate after the break and secured the crucial second goal in the 57th minute. Nikola Milenkovic needlessly pulled Pau Torres to the ground, and after VAR advised referee Glenn Nyberg to review the pitchside monitor, a penalty was awarded. Buendia stepped up and fired Villa ahead from 12 yards.
McGinn Double Seals Victory
Forest, who had been on a 10-game unbeaten run in all competitions, showed none of their previous form and capitulated as two McGinn goals in three minutes sealed their fate. First, the captain was unmarked at the far post and slotted home, then he found the near post from an identical position after Morgan Rogers played him in.
The final score of 4-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate sets up a showdown with Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20, as Villa aim to add another chapter to their storied history.
