Government aide quits as 56 Labour MPs call for Starmer to go

A Government aide has resigned as he joined more than 50 Labour MPs calling for Sir Keir Starmer to stand down after a disastrous set of local election results.

Resignation and Calls for Departure

Tom Rutland, a parliamentary private secretary (PPS), said the Prime Minister had “lost authority” and should “set out a timetable for his departure”. His resignation adds to mounting pressure on the Labour leader following significant losses in council elections across England.

Further Defections

Joe Morris, a PPS to Health Secretary Wes Streeting, and Sally Jameson, a PPS at the Home Office, have also called for Sir Keir to resign. In total, 56 Labour MPs have now publicly called on the Prime Minister to go, marking a severe crisis for his leadership.

The wave of discontent comes after Labour suffered heavy defeats in key battleground areas, with the Conservatives gaining ground and smaller parties making inroads. Critics within the party argue that Starmer has failed to connect with voters and lacks a clear vision for the future.

Sir Keir Starmer has yet to respond formally to the calls for his resignation, but sources close to him indicate he intends to fight on. However, with the number of rebel MPs growing, his position appears increasingly precarious.
