Irish President Catherine Connolly to Meet King Charles During UK Visit
Irish President to Meet King in UK Visit

Irish President Catherine Connolly has remarked that there is "hardly a sector" of British life untouched by Irish influence as she commenced a three-day visit to the United Kingdom, during which she is expected to meet King Charles III.

First Official Visit Since Inauguration

This marks Ms Connolly's first official trip to England since her inauguration in November, where she underscored her dedication to engaging with the Irish diaspora. The visit began on Monday with a stop at the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, west London. There, she delivered a speech and engaged with participants in an Irish language class.

Speech Highlights Irish Contributions

Addressing the audience at the Irish Cultural Centre, Ms Connolly stated: "The Irish contribution to British society is as diverse as can be imagined. From the arts and culture, to healthcare, education, construction and infrastructure, as well as professional, scientific and technical services. Indeed, there is hardly a sector of the economy or an area of life that has not been touched by the Irish here in Britain."

The Galway-born politician is also scheduled to have an engagement with King Charles, though the specific details of their meeting have not been disclosed.

Reception and Further Engagements

On Monday evening, Irish Ambassador to Britain Martin Fraser and his wife Deirdre Fraser will host a reception at the Irish embassy in London in honour of Ms Connolly and her husband, Brian McEnery.

The president's itinerary continues on Tuesday with visits to the Chelsea Flower Show and the London Irish Centre in Camden. On Wednesday, she will travel to Leeds, where she will visit Leeds University and the Leeds Irish Centre. During her time in Leeds, Ms Connolly will receive a briefing on the work of the Irish Health Centre and meet representatives from other Irish centres in the region.

Third Official Visit of Her Term

This UK trip represents Ms Connolly's third official visit since assuming office, following earlier visits to Northern Ireland and Spain.
