Luis Enrique has sent a clear message to the Chelsea board regarding his potential interest in the managerial vacancy at Stamford Bridge. The Paris Saint-Germain boss is among the names linked with the role following Liam Rosenior's sacking last month. As Calum McFarlane temporarily takes charge, the Blues are prioritising the appointment of a new head coach in the summer.
Enrique's Premier League Ambition
The 55-year-old Spaniard, who currently leads PSG, previously expressed a strong desire to work in England. Speaking in 2023 on Cadena SER, he stated: "I have a special attraction – I would like to go to England to work. I follow English football a lot, more than Spanish football." At that time, he had just left his role as Spain's national team manager and dismissed rumours of an immediate move to the Premier League. However, he emphasised that he would only consider clubs with clear ambitions to win major honours.
Enrique added: "I’m not going to go to any team in the Premier League. I would like to go to one that has clear options to do important things." This criterion may pose a challenge for Chelsea, who currently sit ninth in the table and are on a six-match losing streak, with their Champions League qualification hopes severely dented.
Current Situation at Chelsea
The Blues have endured a difficult season, and their chances of European football altogether are under threat. Despite this, Enrique remains a potential candidate, though his future at PSG appears secure for now. He recently confirmed his commitment to the French champions, stating: "There will be small adjustments, just like last year. We won't sign a lot of players." Reports also suggest he is in negotiations for a contract extension until 2030.
Enrique led PSG to their first Champions League title last season, and they are now one game away from reaching back-to-back finals after a 5-4 aggregate win over Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.
Other Candidates for Chelsea Job
Other names linked with the Chelsea position include Andoni Iraola, who is set to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who departed Real Madrid earlier this year.
Enrique's dream of managing in the Premier League remains alive, and Chelsea could provide the opportunity, though the club's current trajectory may not align with his ambitions.
