New Labour Ministers After Four Resign in Protest

The government has appointed four new ministers and three new whips following the resignation of four Labour MPs in protest at Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, Jess Phillips, Alex Davies-Jones and Zubir Ahmed left the government on Tuesday, prompting a reshuffle. Defiant Starmer has challenged his cabinet to put up or shut up amid the leadership coup.

New Appointments

Nesil Caliskan has been made a parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Natalie Fleet has been appointed a PPS in the Home Office. Catherine Atkinson MP becomes a PPS in the Ministry of Justice, and Preet Kaur Gill is now PPS in the Department of Health and Social Care.

Whip Roles

Gen Kitchen has been made comptroller of HM Household, and Deirdre Costigan is the new junior Lord of the Treasury, both serving as Government whips. Shaun Davies will be an assistant whip in the House of Commons.

These changes come as Wes Streeting is set to meet with the Prime Minister, while Labour MPs remain divided over calls for Starmer to resign.
