Barack Obama has revealed that he deliberately holds back from frequent public political criticism, explaining that he prefers to maintain his role as a political leader rather than becoming a "commentator" akin to Jon Stewart. The former US president stated that if he were to regularly criticise current events, he would risk no longer being perceived as a political leader, even though he acknowledges the value of Stewart's work.
Obama's Balancing Act
In a recent interview, Obama elaborated on his approach to public commentary, noting that he consciously limits his remarks to preserve his political standing. He emphasised the importance of acting as a leader who influences policy and public opinion through measured statements, rather than engaging in daily commentary like Stewart, who is known for his satirical news show. Obama praised Stewart's contributions but made clear that his own path requires restraint.
Higher Ground Productions
Obama also discussed his production company, Higher Ground, which he co-founded with Michelle Obama in 2018. He revealed that he dedicates approximately 10 per cent of his time to the company, which is currently transitioning to an independent operation after its deal with Netflix concluded. Higher Ground has produced several acclaimed films and documentaries, including Leave the World Behind, American Factory, and the Oscar-nominated Rustin.
The company has recently expanded its scope beyond film and television, co-producing the Broadway revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Proof, which opened in April. This move marks a new chapter for Higher Ground as it ventures into live theatre. Obama expressed pride in the company's work and its ability to tell diverse stories.
By limiting his public commentary, Obama aims to remain a figure who can effectively engage in political leadership, while also pursuing creative projects through Higher Ground that reflect his and Michelle's interests in storytelling and social impact.
