Barack Obama has revealed that the demands of being a prominent Democratic figurehead continue to weigh on his marriage, a decade after leaving the White House. In an interview with The New Yorker's Peter Slevin, the 44th president discussed how the pressure to speak out against Donald Trump has caused 'genuine tension' in his household, particularly frustrating Michelle Obama.
Obama on Political Pressures
Obama reflected on his hopes that Trump would be restrained by constitutional guardrails, which were quickly dashed. The calls for Obama to respond to Trump's actions, such as the travel ban and expanded immigration detention, intensified. 'It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her,' Obama said. 'She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives.'
Michelle Obama's Political Future
Despite hopes among Democrats that Michelle Obama would enter politics, she has repeatedly expressed disinterest. Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota noted that such hopes are 'naive' and reflect nostalgia for a bygone era. 'In the political world that I'm in, there is an understanding that we are in a different time,' she said.
Obama's Role in the Party
Obama has remained active, supporting redistricting efforts in Virginia and California. However, he avoids becoming a 'commentator,' stating, 'For me to function like Jon Stewart, even once a week, just going off, just ripping what was happening—which, by the way, I'm glad Jon's doing it—then I'm not a political leader, I'm a commentator.'
Criticism from Progressives
Some progressives have criticized Obama's behind-the-scenes role, particularly his involvement in the 2020 primary and the 2024 calls for Biden to step aside. Biden loyalists were angered when Obama reportedly supported Harris taking over the ticket. The hosts of Pod Save America, former Obama staffers, were among those urging Biden to drop out.
