Vivek Ramaswamy Wins Ohio GOP Primary, Eyes Tight Governor Race
Ramaswamy Wins Ohio GOP Primary, Tight Race Ahead

Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican former presidential candidate, secured victory in his primary race for Ohio governor on Tuesday, paving the way for a closely watched contest in the November general election.

Primary Victory and Trump Endorsement

The biotech entrepreneur, who received endorsement from Donald Trump and briefly co-led Trump's so-called "department of government efficiency" (Doge) with Elon Musk at the start of the president's second term, defeated internet personality Casey Putsch to claim the nomination. Trump gave Ramaswamy a late boost on Tuesday, describing the 40-year-old on social media as "Young, Strong, and Smart!"

Putsch, a political novice known for his "car guy" videos on YouTube, had targeted Ramaswamy's south Asian heritage in campaign ads but was heavily defeated, securing less than 20% of the vote.

General Election Showdown

Ramaswamy will face Dr. Amy Acton, who won the Democratic nomination unopposed, in the 3 November general election. Acton served as Ohio's health director during the Covid-19 pandemic. The contest is expected to be highly competitive and expensive. No Democrat has won the state since Ted Strickland was elected governor in 2006, but the party remains hopeful of flipping the seat.

The Cook Political Report in March shifted its rating of the governor's race to succeed term-limited Mike DeWine from "likely Republican" to "lean Republican." DeWine endorsed Ramaswamy in the primary but defended Acton against criticism for her pandemic tenure, insisting that decisions were made by his office.

Campaign Platforms

Acton is running on a platform focused on the high cost of living in Ohio and has criticized Ramaswamy's perceived allegiance to Trump. She has also shared her personal story of overcoming poverty, homelessness, and sexual abuse while growing up in Youngstown. Her background contrasts sharply with Ramaswamy, who became a multimillionaire in his 20s and has amassed a fortune of $2.4 billion from his biotech ventures, according to Forbes.

If elected, Ramaswamy has pledged to make Ohio more affordable by rolling back property and income taxes, advancing technology, and implementing energy reforms to reduce consumer bills. He is also a strong advocate for parental rights in education. "A world-class education is the birthright of every Ohioan & we'll make sure that's what they get, from the inner cities to Appalachia," he wrote on X after his primary victory.

Background and Other Races

Ramaswamy's 2024 presidential campaign began strongly but was suspended after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the Iowa caucuses. He was later appointed co-leader of the Doge cost-cutting initiative following Trump's November 2024 election win but left the role days after Trump's return to the White House in January 2025 amid reported tensions with Musk.

In another consequential Ohio primary on Tuesday, former US Senator Sherrod Brown easily defeated his Democratic rival Ron Kincaid. He will face Republican incumbent Jon Husted in a special election in November, with the winner serving the remainder of the term won by JD Vance in 2022. Brown lost his seat in the 2024 election to Republican Bernie Moreno.
