Chancellor Rachel Reeves faced a hostile interruption during a broadcast interview at a petrol station in Leeds on Wednesday. A man, identified as a supporter of the Reform UK party, repeatedly shouted pro-Nigel Farage slogans and criticised the Chancellor, telling her she was 'ruining the country'.
Heckler's Tirade
The heckler's outburst occurred as Ms Reeves was speaking to the media. He could be heard shouting messages backing Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, and accusing the Chancellor of mismanaging the economy. Ms Reeves responded calmly, stating that 'good manners' are a quintessentially British trait, implying that the man's behaviour fell short of that standard.
Fuel Duty Announcement
The incident took place shortly after Ms Reeves announced a significant policy reversal: the scrapping of a proposed increase in fuel duty. Instead, the existing 5p per litre cut will remain in place until the end of the year. This move is intended to ease financial pressures on motorists and businesses amid ongoing cost-of-living concerns.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage later took to social media to comment on the encounter, expressing his desire to 'buy this man a pint' in a show of support for the heckler.
The confrontation highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding fiscal policy and public sentiment ahead of the next general election.
