Slot Admits Debate Over Future After Tough Liverpool Season

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has acknowledged that there is "always a debate" about a manager's future following a disappointing season, but he remains confident he will remain in charge at Anfield next term.

Slot's Second Season Struggles

The Dutchman has faced persistent questions about his position after a significant decline in fortunes compared to his debut campaign. Slot was widely praised after leading Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season, succeeding Jurgen Klopp impressively. However, his second year has been far more challenging, despite the club spending over £400 million in the summer transfer window, including breaking the British transfer record twice.

Liverpool were out of the title race by Christmas and have had to fight to secure a Champions League spot. They currently sit fourth in the table and appear likely to qualify, but the nature of some performances has raised doubts about Slot's future.

Slot's Response to Criticism

Speaking about his position, Slot said: "I don't think I decide that alone. I am contracted to this club, all the talks we have, so yeah, that is my take on it. If you don't have the best season, compared to last, definitely not been great then it is normal criticism comes and we have all had their share. That is how things work nowadays if you don't win the league."

Slot also insisted it was not his role to assess his own performance. "I think where the world has gone to, if a manager doesn't have their best season, it is always a debate," he added. "That is the new reality in football. Not up to me to judge the people that judge me. They have every right to that opinion and everyone can share that. Everyone used to do that in the pub now they can share it everywhere. Now it is more out in the open and it is the same everywhere."

Investment and Challenges

It is well known that some of Liverpool's big-money signings, such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, have struggled to make an impact. The team has found it difficult to cope with set pieces and break down deep-lying opponents, issues Slot has acknowledged. Despite the heavy spending, there is a recognition that Liverpool need to strengthen in certain areas, especially with talisman Mohamed Salah set to leave after nearly a decade at the club. Goalkeeper Alisson is also being linked with a move away from Anfield.
