President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump appeared together at the White House on Wednesday to honor military mothers. The President and First Lady teamed up with Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance to honor a group of military mothers in the East Room, celebrating their sacrifices ahead of Mother's Day on Sunday.
Melania's Tribute to Military Mothers
Melania praised military mothers who 'find themselves alone, awake in their thoughts, in the darkest hours of the night.' She added, 'Of course, we must also remember the mothers with a spouse overseas, praying for a safe return so their family can become whole once again.'
Trump's Remarks on Iran Conflict
Trump grinned when Melania described him as a 'tough' commander in chief, prompting laughter from the moms in the audience. The President acknowledged that the war in Iran was still underway, even as both countries are clinging to a fragile ceasefire. 'It's a skirmish,' he called the ongoing conflict with Iran, adding it's going 'very smoothly.' 'I think that military mothers would want to hear that,' he added.
The President also said that Melania is an 'incredible mom' to their son, Barron. Trump continues to press for the Iranian leaders to agree to a peace deal, warning of dire consequences if they do not come to an agreement.
Negotiations and Warnings
Earlier Wednesday morning, news of a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding being negotiated between senior Iranian officials and Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner emerged, inspiring optimism of a peace negotiation. Trump signaled hope for an agreement on social media, promising to end Operation Epic Fury and allowing the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened if a deal was reached.
But he also warned of serious consequences if they failed to negotiate. 'If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before,' he wrote.
