Xabi Alonso is poised to become the new Chelsea manager, with a full agreement close to completion. The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss will succeed interim manager Calum McFarlane, who led the Blues to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday at Wembley Stadium.
Contract Details
A four-year contract is thought to be agreeable to both parties, and Alonso will take on the role of manager, not head coach, as Chelsea aims to install him as the face of the club's project.
Alonso's Background
After a turbulent time at Real Madrid, which ended with his sacking in January, Alonso is ready to return to management for the 2026/27 season. He established himself as one of the best young managers during his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite his availability and historical ties to Liverpool, a move to Anfield was not considered, as the Reds are keen to retain Arne Slot. Chelsea had also considered Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola and Fulham's Marco Silva, both available due to expiring contracts.
