Kennedy Triumphs Over Gout Again in Melbourne's Maurie Plant Meet
Kennedy Beats Gout Again in Melbourne Athletics Showdown

Australian sprinting sensation Lachlan Kennedy has once again outshone his rival Gout Gout, securing a thrilling victory in the 200m event at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne. The 22-year-old Queenslander delivered a spectacular performance in front of nearly 10,000 enthusiastic fans at Lakeside Stadium, marking his second consecutive year achieving the 100m-200m double at this prestigious event.

A Fierce Rivalry Reignited on the Track

While many spectators had gathered to witness teen prodigy Gout Gout in action, it was Kennedy who stole the spotlight with a blistering start in the 200m race. He crossed the finish line with a time of 20.38 seconds, narrowly edging out a fast-finishing Gout who clocked 20.43 seconds. New Zealand's Tommy Te Puni secured third place with a time of 20.73 seconds.

'I knew I had to hit it hard and just pray and hold on, and I was able to do it tonight,' Kennedy remarked after his victory. 'I'm pretty cooked. It was my first 100 of the season, second 200, second comp – it's a good start.'

Wet Conditions Challenge Competitors

The race conditions proved challenging as rain began to fall just minutes before the start of the main event, after holding off for most of the three-hour meet. Gout appeared to slip slightly during the opening stages, impacting his start. 'It was very rocky,' Gout commented on his performance. 'It is what it is. It's a bit wet, but there's things you learn and things you've got to focus on.'

Despite the setback, Gout demonstrated remarkable resilience, powering home in the final stretch to trail Kennedy by a mere 0.05 seconds. The Queensland pair are now set to renew their rivalry at the national championships in Sydney in a fortnight.

'Today, he had the 'W' but next time I'll be better, for sure,' Gout declared. 'He's a Queensland guy and a good friend of mine, so congratulations to him. But I'll be back, for sure.'

Record-Breaking Performances Across the Meet

Earlier in the evening, Kennedy had already made headlines by breaking Jamaican legend Asafa Powell's meet record in the 100m. He clocked an impressive 10.03 seconds, surpassing Powell's 2008 Melbourne time by 0.01 seconds. Rohan Browning finished second with 10.25 seconds, while Kiwi Tiaan Whelpton took third with 10.29 seconds.

Other Notable Achievements at Lakeside Stadium

The Maurie Plant Meet featured several other outstanding performances:

  • Cameron Myers, a rising star of Australian track and field, dominated the John Landy 1500m with a blistering final lap. The 19-year-old posted the fastest 1500m time on Australian soil at 3:30.42, leaving Adam Spencer (3:37.51) and Callum Davies (3:39.03) in second and third place respectively.
  • Olympic champion Nina Kennedy continued her comeback from an injury-plagued 2025 by clearing a meet-record 4.72m in the women's pole vault, using a modified run-up.
  • American star Jacory Patterson set a new meet record in the men's 400m, winning in 44.41 seconds ahead of locals Luke van Ratingen (45.03) and Tom Reynolds (45.13).
