Lachlan Kennedy Makes History with Sub-10 Second 100m Run on Australian Soil

Sprint sensation Lachlan Kennedy has kicked off his national athletics championship campaign in spectacular fashion, becoming the first Australian to legally break the 10-second barrier for the 100m on home soil. The historic moment occurred during perfect conditions at Sydney Olympic Park's athletics centre, where Kennedy blazed through his first heat with a time of 9.96 seconds.

A Landmark Achievement in Australian Sprinting

This remarkable performance marks only the second time the 22-year-old has run sub-10 seconds, following his previous achievement of 9.98 seconds at the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya last year. Kennedy's accomplishment places him among an elite group of Australian sprinters who have broken the barrier, though his run stands out as the first achieved legally within Australia's borders.

National record-holder Patrick Johnson remains the only other Australian to have completed this feat, having run 9.93 seconds in Mito, Japan back in 2003. Other notable Australian sprinters including Rohan Browning (9.96 seconds) and teen star Gout Gout (9.99 seconds) have also broken the 10-second mark, but only with the assistance of illegal tailwinds that rendered their times ineligible for record purposes.

Kennedy's Reaction to the Historic Run

'I didn't really even expect it. I was just super relaxed. I was definitely pushing it, but yeah, it just felt easy, you know?' Kennedy revealed after his groundbreaking performance. 'I think I got a bit more in the tank, but good to see I'm in good form. Definitely honoured to be the first. No one can ever take that away from you.'

The young sprinter's confidence appears well-founded, having recently cemented his status as Australia's fastest man at the Maurie Plant Meet a fortnight ago. There he set a 100m meet record of 10.03 seconds before upstaging Gout Gout once again to claim victory in the 200m event.

Looking Ahead to Further Records and Championships

When questioned about the possibility of shaving his time down to an astonishing 9.8 seconds, Kennedy responded optimistically: 'This year, definitely. I think I've got so much more to give, but we're off to a cracking start.' He added thoughtfully, 'Of all the conditions, today is probably the best objectively, but at the end of the day, I'm here to win that national final. I'm here to get my first national championship, so saving the best for tomorrow.'

Two-time Olympian and defending national 100m champion Rohan Browning found himself unable to match Kennedy's blistering pace during the heats, managing a time of 10.24 seconds to secure his place in Saturday's semi-final. Should Kennedy successfully dethrone Browning in the final, he will clinch a coveted spot for this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Additional Events and Rivalries

Beyond the 100m competition, Kennedy will also compete in the 200m event in Sydney, continuing his ongoing rivalry with Gout Gout. However, the younger Queenslander will not be competing for a Glasgow spot in this particular event.

Meanwhile, attention turns to other events as Jessica Hull prepares to take to the track later on Friday for the 1500m final. The Paris Olympics 1500m silver medallist must fend off rising star Claudia Hollingsworth to defend her national title. Hull faces an ambitious schedule this weekend, planning to compete in both the 800m and 5000m events despite having just a 32-minute break between the two finals on Sunday.

Hollingsworth, aged just 20, demonstrated her formidable talent last month when she sensationally held off British middle-distance heavyweight Georgia Hunter Bell to claim victory in the 1500m at the Maurie Plant Meet. This sets the stage for an exciting showdown between established champion and emerging talent in the women's distance events.
