Lauren Price Determined to Cement Welsh Legacy in Cardiff Title Defence
The unbeaten world champion Lauren Price has opened up about her ambition to create a lasting legacy in Wales as she prepares for her professional boxing match tonight. The Olympic gold medallist continues her impressive journey in the sport with a welterweight title defence against Stephanie Pineiro in Cardiff.
World Titles on the Line in Cardiff Showdown
Price's three welterweight world championships will be at stake during tonight's bout at the Cardiff venue. The talented fighter is strategically biding her time while awaiting a potential clash that would unify all four major belts in her division. The final piece required to complete the undisputed championship puzzle currently belongs to Mikaela Mayer, who has expressed willingness to face her undefeated rival in the ring.
Navigating Boxing's Complex Landscape
Price acknowledges that certain aspects of her boxing journey remain beyond her direct control. "There are elements in boxing you simply cannot control, and for me it's primarily about staying active and competing regularly," she explained. "Naturally I aspire to become the undisputed champion, but I've come to understand that these major fights don't always materialise immediately due to various behind-the-scenes factors including financial considerations and promoter negotiations."
"My objective is to participate in the most significant fights available," Price continued. "Whether that involves achieving undisputed status or potentially moving up in weight class to challenge established names like Katie Taylor, I simply want to be involved in major boxing events. I particularly want to compete regularly in Wales and establish a genuine legacy within my home nation."
Pride in Welsh Heritage and Multisport Background
Price proudly displays the Welsh dragon symbol and has remarkably represented her country across four different sports throughout her athletic career. She earned an impressive 52 caps playing football for Wales and also wore the national jersey in both taekwondo and kickboxing before ultimately dedicating herself to professional boxing.
"The most wonderful aspect of being Welsh is undoubtedly the people and the passionate supporters," Price reflected. "I feel tremendous pride in my Welsh identity every time I enter the boxing ring, knowing I'm representing Wales on the global stage. Since I reside in Sheffield from Monday through Friday each week, returning home to Wales feels particularly special. Even during routine activities like running in Wales, I receive recognition from supporters. Sometimes I'll be shopping at Tesco with my grandmother and people will acknowledge me. I consider myself fortunate and deeply grateful for my Welsh heritage."
The Lauren Price versus Stephanie Pineiro championship bout will be broadcast live on BBC 2 tonight beginning at 8pm, offering Welsh boxing fans an opportunity to witness their champion in action as she continues her quest to build a lasting legacy in Welsh sporting history.
