Hockey Coach Receives Lifetime Ban for Emotional Abuse of Young Players
A prominent hockey coach has been permanently barred from working with children and teenagers after being found guilty by the sport's governing body of emotionally abusing and bullying young athletes over many years. Duncan Parnis, 41, the former head of hockey at the prestigious Ipswich School, had coached across England for two decades, building a reputation for developing talented players.
Investigation and Allegations
England Hockey launched an investigation into Parnis for serious safeguarding offences after receiving reports from parents, former players, and fellow coaches last year. The complaints detailed a pattern of emotional and verbal abuse, particularly targeting young female athletes, with accusations that his behaviour left many players psychologically damaged.
One former player described the toxic environment: 'It wasn't simply tough coaching. It was an atmosphere where approval could be given and withdrawn, where a child could be singled out, then pulled back in – creating a cycle of dependence on the coach's validation.'
A parent emphasised that the victims were not fragile individuals but dedicated athletes training multiple times weekly and competing at high levels, noting that resilience was not the issue.
Previous Investigations and Club Establishment
This marked the third time Parnis had faced investigation over similar allegations, though he consistently denied any wrongdoing. Following a second investigation, he established Knole Park Hockey Club in Sevenoaks, Kent, where further serious complaints emerged.
Complainants described how Parnis ran the club 'like a cult,' with some members becoming desensitised to his behaviour due to his apparent success – at one point, six young women from Knole Park were playing for England U18 teams.
Disciplinary Hearing and Permanent Exclusion
At a final hearing on January 21, Parnis, who had been suspended since last June, was found guilty of 'harming the safety and welfare of young people' and banned from coaching players under 18. The disciplinary panel, which he did not attend, heard harrowing first-hand evidence of his controlling behaviour through psychological and verbal abuse.
England Hockey, headquartered at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, confirmed his permanent exclusion from all hockey-related activities involving minors across any club and prohibited him from holding any official position within under-18 clubs.
Response and Aftermath
Both England Hockey and Knole Park Hockey Club have declined to comment on the matter. Duncan Parnis has not responded to requests for comment regarding the lifetime ban and the serious allegations against him.
