LA Chargers' Jesse Minter Interviewed by All 8 NFL Teams with Head Coach Vacancies
Jesse Minter in Demand by All 8 NFL Teams Needing Head Coach

Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has become the most sought-after candidate in the National Football League's current head coaching search, with a remarkable level of interest from franchises across the league.

Unprecedented Demand for Defensive Mastermind

Every single one of the eight NFL teams with a head coach opening has formally requested an interview with Jesse Minter, marking an exceptional level of demand for the 42-year-old coach. The teams vying for his attention are the Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, and Las Vegas Raiders.

According to respected NFL insider Albert Breer, Minter is scheduled to hold initial interviews with the Titans and Cardinals as early as Tuesday. However, due to league regulations, these first discussions must be conducted virtually. NFL rules stipulate that in-person interviews with candidates currently employed by other clubs cannot occur before January 19.

A Meteoric Rise Fueled by Defensive Dominance

This widespread interest follows two highly impressive seasons where Minter oversaw the Chargers' defence. His unit's performance in the 2024 season was particularly dominant, finishing as the league's number one scoring defence. Furthermore, the Chargers allowed the fifth-fewest total yards and the ninth-fewest points per game across the entire NFL last season.

Minter, originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, was brought to the Chargers in 2024 by head coach Jim Harbaugh, reuniting after their successful collaboration at the University of Michigan. His coaching journey began as a defensive intern at Notre Dame. After a brief stint with the Cincinnati Bearcats, he served as linebackers coach and later defensive coordinator at Indiana State.

From College Ranks to NFL Contender

His career path then included a four-year tenure as defensive coordinator at Georgia State, before his first break into the professional game with the Baltimore Ravens in 2017 as a defensive assistant. He was promoted to defensive backs coach for the 2020 season. Minter then returned to the college circuit, taking the defensive coordinator and safeties coach role at Vanderbilt, prior to his pivotal two-year spell at Michigan which led to his NFL return with Harbaugh.

The current flurry of head coach vacancies was triggered by the series of dismissals on the NFL's so-called 'Black Monday' and the days surrounding it. The Browns parted ways with Kevin Stefanski, the Raiders dismissed Pete Carroll, and the Cardinals let go of Jonathan Gannon. The Atlanta Falcons had already moved on from Raheem Morris the night before Black Monday, while the Baltimore Ravens made the decision to part with John Harbaugh on the following Tuesday.

With his proven ability to construct a top-tier defence and his connection to the successful Harbaugh coaching tree, Jesse Minter's stock has never been higher. The coming weeks will reveal which of the eight interested franchises can secure his services to lead their team into a new era.
