Sir Geoffrey Boycott Demands England Sack Coach Brendon McCullum After Ashes Defeat
Boycott: Sack McCullum, Stokes Must Change or Go

Legendary England batsman Sir Geoffrey Boycott has issued a scathing demand for the removal of head coach Brendon McCullum following Australia's decisive Ashes victory in Adelaide.

Boycott's Blunt Verdict on England's Leadership

In his column for The Daily Telegraph on Sunday 21 December 2025, Boycott stated that "hubris has taken over from common sense" within the England setup. He directly called on managing director Rob Key to act, writing: "We are tired of this duo talking a good game but not delivering against the best teams so Rob Key, it is time for you to assert yourself."

Boycott, a long-standing critic of the aggressive 'Bazball' philosophy, compared captain Ben Stokes and McCullum to "men digging a hole to nowhere." He argued that change is "absolutely necessary" for the team to progress.

A Stern Warning for Captain Stokes

The former opener did not spare skipper Ben Stokes, suggesting his position should also be under threat. Boycott advised that Key must sit down with Stokes to determine if he is willing to compromise on his batting approach and embrace new ideas.

"If he doesn't see that a change of attitude is needed then you have to find a new captain," Boycott warned, with England facing the prospect of a 5-0 series whitewash.

Atherton's 'Disappointing' Assessment

The criticism was echoed by former England captain Michael Atherton, who described the team's capitulation in the Ashes as one of the most "disappointing" he could recall.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Atherton, who played in 33 Ashes Tests, said: "I felt England had the tools to do the job here, or least challenge, and I felt there were weaknesses or areas to exploit in the Australian team." His comments underscore a widespread sense of missed opportunity following the third Test defeat.

The pressure is now mounting intensely on the England leadership, with a legendary figure like Boycott making such a public and forceful call for a major overhaul.
