Cyclist Clashes with Motorist in Sydney Road Rage Incident

A single mother from Sydney's north has described her terror after a cyclist allegedly struck her during a road rage confrontation. Monique was driving along Pittwater Road when a male cyclist accused her of cutting him off. She began filming as he opened her car door and shouted abuse.

The man, wearing a green lycra shirt with 'Tour of Ireland' on it, leaned into her vehicle and appeared to swat at her face. After the incident, he cycled away. Monique reported the matter to police but was told they could not act without the cyclist's identification.

The incident has renewed calls for cyclists to be registered on NSW roads. Lawyer Sam Macedone noted the difficulty in identifying offenders without registration plates. The debate over cyclist licensing has been ongoing, with Bicycle NSW CEO Peter McLean advocating for education over licensing to improve road safety.

In 2014, NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay proposed a cycling licence to reduce road deaths, but it was not implemented. Instead, fines for cyclists were increased in 2016, matching those for drivers for offences such as running red lights and riding recklessly.
