Robert Lewandowski will miss Poland's World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley on Wednesday after suffering a knee injury, the Polish national team has confirmed. The Bayern Munich striker damaged ligaments in his right knee during Poland's 3-0 win over Andorra last week and will play no part in the crucial match.
Poland said playing the forward 'would carry too much risk of aggravating the injury' and expect him to be sidelined for between five and ten days. This could also see him miss Bayern Munich's pivotal Bundesliga clash with RB Leipzig on April 3.
Lewandowski, one of the most feared strikers in world football, scored twice against Andorra before being substituted on the hour mark. Manager Paulo Sousa said after the game: 'He felt a pain in his knee. Tomorrow we will check whether he is okay.'
His absence is a huge boost for England, who face Poland as their toughest opponent in Group I. Gareth Southgate's side have started qualifying with wins over San Marino and Albania, and will now face a Poland side without their star player.
