Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga has explained the reason behind his viral frustration at the end of Sweden's 1-1 World Cup draw with Japan, a result that nonetheless secured their place in the knockout stages.
Elanga's Second World Cup Goal
The 24-year-old scored his second goal in as many World Cup matches, cutting inside from the right wing and curling a left-footed strike beyond Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into the far corner. His goal canceled out Daizen Maeda's opener, leaving Sweden in third place in their group but earning the point needed to qualify as one of the eight best third-placed sides.
The Viral Moment Explained
At full-time, Elanga was pictured sinking to the floor and smacking the ground in frustration, leading many to believe he thought Sweden had not done enough to qualify. However, Elanga clarified to BBC Sport: "My reaction after the Sweden-Japan game was a bit of disappointment but at the same time a bit of joy because obviously I wanted to win the game, I wanted to score again." He added, "Of course, I got told during the game that one point was enough. But I'm a winner of course, I want us to win every single game, I wanted to get some momentum and rhythm ready for the next round. But at the end of the day one point was enough and we are all happy with that. I knew we were qualified but I just wanted to win the game because I am a winner and I wanted to score more goals."
Head Coach Graham Potter's Reaction
Sweden head coach Graham Potter was initially baffled by Elanga's reaction. When asked about it in his post-match press conference, Potter said: "That explains a few things then. It couldn't have been any clearer for him so he is obviously thinking about something else. Bless him. I love him at the moment but, dear me."
Next Match: Sweden vs France
Sweden continue their World Cup journey on Tuesday evening in New York, facing France in the last 32 at 10pm BST. Elanga will hope to maintain his fine form in the tournament.
