Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte is at the center of a player revolt against Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa just hours before a crucial World Cup group-stage match against Spain. Uruguay must avoid defeat to keep their Round of 32 hopes alive after collecting only two points from draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.
Players confront Bielsa over training and tactics
According to GiveMeSport, a group of players including Ugarte, Federico Valverde, goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, and Rodrigo Bentancur called a meeting with Bielsa to express dissatisfaction with excessively grueling training sessions that have led to injuries. They also demanded tactical adjustments following a disappointing run of results.
Bielsa responded with a team meeting of his own, rejecting calls for a defensive approach against Spain and insisting on maintaining his existing tactics, a stance that could expose players to further injury risks. El Espectador reported that Bielsa accused the players of attempting to force him out over his decision to omit Luis Suarez and Nahitan Nandez from the squad. The 70-year-old also allegedly claimed credit for developing several national team players, including Maxi Araujo and Sebastian Caceres.
World Cup stakes and Bielsa's press conference
Uruguay sit second in Group H but will be eliminated if they lose to Spain. A draw guarantees progression only if Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia draw in the other group match; otherwise, Uruguay could drop to third and rely on being among the best eight third-placed teams. Speaking at a press conference, Bielsa said: "We are approaching tomorrow's match as a final. One of the best ways to defend is to make sure the opponent has the ball for less time." He praised Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, adding: "The type of soccer he achieved with Spain is unique. It's a lot more beautiful than what I achieved with my team."
Previous Bielsa controversy at World Cup
This is not the first incident involving Bielsa at the tournament. Earlier, he refused to participate in a World Cup photoshoot with media, staring at the ground while photographers tried to capture his portrait. When asked to explain, Bielsa said: "I don't have to give any explanation. The picture was taken the way it was taken. I'm not a model." He added: "There is a limit in terms of what we need to explain. If I'm wearing glasses, 'why am I wearing glasses?' There is nothing wrong about wearing glasses or looking into somebody's eyes or looking down."
Match details and group implications
Uruguay face Spain at Estadio Guadalajara at 1am BST on Saturday. Simultaneously, Cape Verde play Saudi Arabia in Houston as Group H concludes. A loss for Uruguay would guarantee their elimination, while a draw leaves their fate dependent on the other result.
