Organisers have announced a 24-hour postponement of professional rock climber Alex Honnold's highly anticipated ropeless ascent of the Taipei 101 skyscraper, citing unfavourable weather conditions in the Taiwanese capital.
Safety Concerns Prompt Schedule Change
The decision to delay the free solo climb was made less than an hour before the event was scheduled to commence on Saturday local time, as persistent rain continued to fall in Taipei. Organisers emphasised that safety remains their paramount concern, with the rescheduled climb now set for Sunday morning when forecasts predict sunnier skies.
Broadcast Adjustments for Global Audience
Originally planned for live broadcast on Netflix on Saturday in Taiwan, corresponding to Friday evening for viewers in the United States, the event will now air live on Saturday evening U.S. time. This translates to 5 p.m. Pacific Time or 8 p.m. Eastern Time, maintaining the planned broadcast slot for American audiences despite the postponement.
Netflix confirmed in their official announcement that ensuring Honnold's safety was their top priority throughout the decision-making process. Organisers had previously acknowledged the possibility of light rain on the original climb morning and had contingency plans in place to delay the event if weather conditions proved unsuitable.
The iconic Taipei 101, once the world's tallest building, serves as the dramatic backdrop for this extraordinary athletic feat. Honnold, renowned for his free solo ascents without ropes or safety equipment, continues to push the boundaries of extreme sports under carefully managed conditions that prioritise his wellbeing above all other considerations.
