Arsenal Teen's Dad Slams Coach for 'Self-Promotion' After Record

The father of Arsenal's teenage sensation Max Dowman has launched a scathing attack on a former academy coach who publicly discussed his role in the youngster's development, labelling it "a really sad piece of attempted self-promotion." The coach, Temisan Williams, has since issued a public apology following the criticism.

Record-Breaking Debut Sparks Controversy

Sixteen-year-old attacking midfielder Max Dowman stole the headlines on Saturday after coming off the bench to help Arsenal secure a crucial 2-0 victory over Everton. His performance sent Mikel Arteta's side nine points clear of Manchester City at the Premier League summit.

Dowman assisted Viktor Gyokeres' 89th-minute strike before scoring on the breakaway in the seventh minute of added time. This remarkable goal made him the youngest scorer in Premier League history, drawing comparisons to Lionel Messi from pundits like John Terry.

Father's Fury Over Public Comments

However, the celebrations were overshadowed by controversy when Dowman's father, Robert Dowman, expressed fury on social media platform X. He targeted Temisan Williams, a former academy coach at Arsenal, Tottenham, and Fulham, who had spoken about working with Max on talkSPORT's breakfast show.

"Listening to this guy Temisan Williams claiming he was any part of Max's journey is a really sad piece of attempted self-promotion," Dowman stated. "I have asked him previously to refrain from doing so but still he pops up on talkSPORT this morning. I remember him putting the cones out at training a few times but that's about it."

He emphasised the family's gratitude to many fabulous coaches but asserted Williams was "certainly not one of them."

Coach Issues Public Apology

In response, Williams took to X to issue an apology. "Following Rob Dowman's comments today: I have spoken with Rob Dowman and apologised to him and his family," he wrote. "Going forward, I will not be discussing Max Dowman's development. I wish Rob Dowman and his family nothing but continued success."

During his talkSPORT appearance, Williams had praised Dowman's achievements, describing them as "a fantastic thing, incredible thing that Max has done." He highlighted his role as an Under-12s assistant coach, noting he saw Max for two years as "a small part of his journey."

Williams also urged caution against excessive hype, stating, "We definitely need to calm down. We've seen some crazy comparisons. He's not even started his career and he's being compared to those who are legends of the game."

Ongoing Dispute and Warnings

Despite Williams' positive words about Max being "very grounded" and having a "brilliant" family, Robert Dowman remained dissatisfied. In an interaction with a talkSPORT producer seeking an interview, he declined and offered strong advice.

"One piece of advice I will give you is that Temisan Williams claiming he has in any way contributed to Max's development is verging on fraud," Dowman said. He warned that Williams might use platforms to promote himself under false pretences, potentially preying on parents chasing dreams for their children.

The producer thanked him and asked for alternative contacts, but Dowman reiterated his stance, urging diligence in vetting such claims. Daily Mail Sport has contacted Arsenal for clarification on Williams' role and his involvement with Dowman during his time at the club.

This incident highlights the intense scrutiny and pressures surrounding young football prodigies, as families navigate media attention and external claims about their development journeys.
