Newcastle United have finalised the £55 million transfer of striker Yoane Wissa from Brentford, with the 28-year-old signing a long-term contract at St James' Park. The deal was agreed on Monday morning after Brentford held out for close to their £60m valuation, despite Wissa entering the final year of his contract.
Wissa had publicly criticised Brentford on social media for blocking his move to Newcastle, accusing the club of “unduly standing in his way”. The Bees had previously rejected offers worth around £40m for the Democratic Republic of the Congo international, who will now wear the number nine shirt for the Magpies.
Wissa scored 49 goals in 149 appearances for Brentford, including 19 in the Premier League last season, since joining from Lorient for £8.5m in 2021. His departure is the second major sale for Brentford this window, following Bryan Mbeumo's £65m move to Manchester United. The club also saw manager Thomas Frank leave for Tottenham and former captain Christian Nørgaard join Arsenal this summer.
Newcastle have now added two strikers in quick succession, with Wissa following Nick Woltemade's £70m arrival from Stuttgart. The signing coincides with Liverpool's British record £125m acquisition of Alexander Isak. Wissa expressed his excitement, stating: “I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.” Head coach Eddie Howe praised Wissa's attributes, saying: “He has pace, power and an excellent work rate.”
