Carrick Reveals Martinez Injury and Sesko Management for Everton Clash

Manchester United's interim head coach Michael Carrick has provided a clear explanation for two significant selection decisions ahead of the Premier League encounter with Everton. The Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez has been omitted from the squad entirely, while the promising striker Benjamin Sesko finds himself named among the substitutes once again.

Martinez Sidelined with Minor Knock

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to kick-off, Carrick confirmed that Martinez sustained an injury during training this week. The manager emphasized that the issue does not appear to be serious, but it was sufficient to rule the centre-back out of contention for the match at Goodison Park.

"He picked up something during the week," Carrick stated. "It doesn't seem too bad at all. We're working through that at the moment. He's not available tonight. Leny Yoro has done well, he comes in and we move forward."

This absence presents an opportunity for young defender Leny Yoro to step into the starting lineup, as United aim to maintain defensive solidity without one of their key players.

Sesko's Development Carefully Managed

Despite scoring twice in his last three appearances from the bench, Benjamin Sesko continues to be utilised as a substitute. Carrick elaborated on the reasoning behind this cautious approach with the young Slovenian forward.

"He's still learning, he's still young, and he's still adapting to kind of life here as well," Carrick explained. "I'm delighted the way he's going. He's taking big steps, even in the short time we've been together. And he's in a good place."

The interim boss acknowledged a deliberate management strategy, describing it as "a little bit of being, I wouldn't say, careful. I think this is managing it as well." He was full of praise for Sesko's potential and current impact.

"He's ready. He looks like a real threat. He looks like a real presence. He's confident," Carrick affirmed. "We've got selections to make, and it's not always straightforward, but certainly to have him to come on and finish games, as he has done recently, is a great thing for us to have. He's going to be a big player at this club. For a long time, I've been hugely impressed with what he's done already, but I think there's loads more to come from him, so I'm really excited about that."

Strategic Decisions for Crucial Fixture

These revelations underscore the tactical and player management considerations facing Carrick in a crucial period for the club. The decision to rest Martinez, albeit due to injury, and to gradually integrate Sesko highlights a balance between immediate match needs and long-term player development.

With Yoro stepping in for Martinez, United's defensive reshuffle will be tested against an Everton side fighting for points. Meanwhile, Sesko remains a potent option from the bench, poised to make another impactful cameo as he continues his adaptation to English football.
