Chelsea to Decide on Pre-Match Huddle After Referee Incident
Chelsea to Decide on Huddle After Referee Incident

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has revealed that the club will make a decision regarding their pre-match huddle ritual following the farcical incident involving referee Paul Tierney. The referee found himself inadvertently trapped within the circle of Chelsea players ahead of Saturday's Premier League match against Newcastle United, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Blues.

Rosenior Addresses the Controversy

Speaking ahead of Chelsea's crucial Champions League last-16 second leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, Rosenior emphasised that the huddle is not intended to intimidate or cause annoyance. However, he declined to confirm whether the practice would be repeated as his side prepares to face PSG, needing to overcome a significant 5-2 deficit from the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

"I think it's been blown out of proportion," Rosenior stated. "It's a small thing among many serious things that we need to address, such as the massive game against PSG. The lads have always wanted to show unity and togetherness, and I think they'll continue to do that. But what we don't want is to antagonise and bring more noise on ourselves. We'll make the decision on where we do that on the pitch tomorrow."

Focus on the PSG Challenge

The former Strasbourg boss reiterated that his primary focus remains on the upcoming Champions League fixture, where Chelsea must achieve the improbable by recovering a three-goal deficit to eliminate the European champions. "We have a huge game against PSG tomorrow," he said. "We have an opportunity to do something really special. We know we need to be perfect. I'd rather focus on that."

Rosenior also mentioned plans to meet with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) this week to discuss refereeing matters, though not necessarily the huddle incident. Decisions that have gone against Chelsea in recent matches are expected to be on the agenda.

Injury Blow for Chelsea

In a significant setback for the team, captain Reece James is potentially facing several weeks out after injuring his hamstring during the Newcastle match. The 26-year-old defender, who signed a new six-year contract on Friday, will be unavailable for the PSG game and possibly beyond.

"Reece felt something in his hamstring at the end of the game against Newcastle," Rosenior explained. "Really frustrating and disappointing one for us. We don't know the full extent of that injury, but he's out for tomorrow's game. It could be weeks with a hamstring injury; it's never great. Hopefully, we can get him scanned, find out the full extent, then we'll know more. We know what an important leader he is in the group. He's our captain."

Additionally, Malo Gusto could miss the PSG match due to illness, further complicating Chelsea's defensive options. "Malo is ill today, so we'll have a look at him for tomorrow," Rosenior added.

The injury to James comes as a major blow, especially after he had seemingly overcome the worst of his fitness problems. Tying the England defender down until 2032 was hailed as a major coup by the club, making his absence all the more significant during this critical period.
