Melbourne City have taken a commanding 2-0 lead over Wellington Phoenix at half-time in the A-League Women grand final at AAMI Park, thanks to a quickfire brace from golden boot winner Holly McNamara.
First Half Dominance
City dominated possession from the outset, with over 70% of the ball in the opening stages. The premiers created several chances before McNamara broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute. The Matildas striker was given ample space on the left edge of the penalty area and curled a precise shot into the far corner, leaving Phoenix goalkeeper Victoria Esson with no chance.
Just one minute later, McNamara struck again. Shelby McMahon won the ball in midfield and played a through ball to McNamara, who calmly slotted home from inside the box to double City's lead. The two goals in quick succession left the Phoenix reeling.
