Former Manchester United Defender Tyler Blackett Signs with New Mexico United
Ex-Man Utd Defender Tyler Blackett Joins New Mexico United

New Mexico United has officially announced the signing of former Manchester United defender Tyler Blackett for the remainder of the current season. The 32-year-old defender will join the club based in Albuquerque, which competes in the USL Championship, the second tier of American football below Major League Soccer.

Blackett's Professional Journey and Career Highlights

Tyler Blackett began his professional career at Manchester United, making his debut under manager Louis van Gaal in 2014. He made 11 appearances for the club, stepping into the first team during an injury crisis. His debut match was against Swansea City, which ended in a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

After his time at Manchester United, Blackett went on loan to Celtic in August 2015 before signing a four-year contract with Reading the following season. Following the expiration of his contract in 2020, he had spells at Nottingham Forest and FC Cincinnati before joining Rotherham United for just over a year. His move to New Mexico comes two years after being released by Rotherham following their relegation to League One.

Insights from Blackett and Club Officials

Speaking to USL media, New Mexico United sporting director Itamar Keinan expressed enthusiasm about the signing. 'We are thrilled to add someone with Tyler’s pedigree to our club,' Keinan said. 'Tyler is not only bringing a wealth of experience with him, but also real quality and leadership to our backline. Welcome to the Black and Yellow, Tyler!'

Blackett, who hails from Manchester and came through the United academy, made his professional debut at age 19 with Blackpool. He was tipped for big things as a youngster, having featured for England at almost every youth level, but struggled to meet expectations. Reflecting on his departure from Manchester United, Blackett told The Times in 2017 that it was a 'selfish decision' driven by personal aspirations.

'I am sure we had a conversation at some point, knowing how Van Gaal is, about why I was dropped earlier that season,' Blackett recalled. 'He was quite straightforward and he tried to get the best out of the team. Sometimes it was good enough and sometimes it wasn't. He's a good manager. I wouldn't say it was the hardest decision (leaving United). It was a selfish decision. We all have our own aspirations and we have to make decisions not for the team, but for personal reasons.'

New Mexico United's Current Season and Future Prospects

New Mexico United currently sits sixth in the Western Conference of the USL Championship. With the season still in its early stages, the team must finish in the top eight to secure a spot in the play-offs. Their next match is against Phoenix Rising away from home next weekend, where Blackett's experience could prove valuable.

This signing marks a significant addition to New Mexico United's squad, as they aim to strengthen their defensive line and improve their standings in the competitive USL Championship. Blackett's background with top clubs like Manchester United and his international youth experience are expected to bring both skill and leadership to the team.
