France 3-0 Sweden: Mbappe Double Sends France to Last-16

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France breezed past Sweden 3-0 to secure their place in the World Cup last-16. The Real Madrid star opened the scoring before Bradley Barcola added a thunderous second, and Mbappe completed the rout to put Graham Potter’s side to the sword.

Mbappe Continues Golden Boot Charge

Mbappe’s double takes his tournament tally to five goals, strengthening his claim for the Golden Boot. His first came from a swift counter-attack, finishing coolly past the Swedish goalkeeper. The second was a clinical strike after a neat build-up, leaving the Swedish defence helpless.

“Kylian is in incredible form,” said France coach Didier Deschamps after the match. “He is decisive in every game, and his movement is a nightmare for defenders.”

Barcola’s Stunning Strike

Bradley Barcola put the result beyond doubt with a thumping strike from outside the box. The Paris Saint-Germain winger collected a pass on the left, cut inside, and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner. It was his first World Cup goal and showcased his growing confidence on the international stage.

Sweden Unable to Respond

Despite boasting attacking talents such as Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, Sweden failed to create clear chances against a solid French defence. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan was rarely tested, as Les Bleus controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout.

“We simply weren’t good enough today,” said Sweden manager Graham Potter. “France are a top side, and we couldn’t match their intensity.”

Next Up: Giant-Killing Paraguay

France will now face Paraguay in the round of 16. Paraguay have been the surprise package of the tournament, having knocked out previous champions Germany in the group stage. Deschamps warned his team not to underestimate them: “Paraguay have shown they can beat anyone. We must be fully focused.”

The match is scheduled for Saturday, with France expected to progress as heavy favourites.
